JERSEY’S under-18s turned in an excellent team performance to retain the silverware in the Standard Bank inter-insular on Sunday.
Before good galleries at the Royal Jersey, Peter Crenan’s fledglings won the match for the seventh consecutive year following a 10 1/2-6 1/2 success against Guernsey.
The scores were tied overnight from Saturday going into the singles after Jersey won the opening foursomes 2 1/2-1 1/2 only for Guernsey to win the afternoon’s four-balls by the same margin to level the score.
So it was down to the singles on Sunday morning and with little between the teams coming through the first seven holes, both islands were up in four matches with the other being level.
Jersey then turned the screw to win 6 1/2 points to Guernsey’s 2 1/2.
Crenan said: ‘It was a fantastic result in the end.
Everyone expected a close match and it was most of the way until we nudged away towards the end.
‘Robbie Bailey gained the point to win the match and it was thoroughly deserved.
It was a fitting finish to his junior career; he finished with four 3s for two pars and two birdies to take the team over the finishing line.
‘Matt Nicole and Kieran Goodricke put points on the board on their débuts while Olivia Higgins proved her worth by taking her opponent to the 18th to gain a half.
‘It was a shame really because she could have won the match at the 17th but unfortunately lipped out with a three-foot putt.
‘We lose four players next season because of their age but I am not worried.
There are loads of talented youngsters coming through and that is great for the sport.
‘It was a brilliant weekend, Guernsey gave us a great game throughout and the sportsmanship from the players of both island’s was first class.’ Robbie Bailey and Gyles Robin both recorded a maximum three points for the winners with Kyle Turmel, Matt Nicolle and Kieran Goodricke all unbeaten.
Andrew Gray chipped in at the 15th to win his singles while Jack Critchley lost his on the 18th.
Robin, Goodricke and Turmel were solid with big singles wins while Nicolle was in control throughout his game.
Josh Ozard gave a fine account of himself on his debut against Guernsey’s number two while Higgins squandered her winning chance after clawing her way back from a two-hole deficit.
Foursomes (Jersey players named first): Bailey and Robin beat Tom Le Huray and Jack Mitchell 6 and 5; Goodricke, Nicolle halved with Stuart Hamon, Sean Mills; Critchley, Ozard lost to Emile Thompson, Ross Wheeler 3 and 2; Turmel, Gray beat Craig Shorto, Wayne Moore 6 and 5.
Jersey 2 1/2, Guernsey 1 1/2.
