Historic prize for penalty champion

Thursday 1st September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

SG HAMBROS Bank & Trust (Jersey) Limited are to run a second penalty competition this winter for junior footballers.

And the winner will receive a trip to Arsenal to watch the last ever Premiership game to be played at Highbury, against Wigan Athletic on Saturday 7 May, from SG Hambros’ private box at the ground.

Return air travel will also be provided, together with overnight accommodation should the kick-off time so require.

There will be a chance to go behind the scenes and a pre-match lunch at the ground.

St Paul’s FC’s Ruben Pestana won the inaugural event last March and he will be defending his crown this winter.

Competition has been extended this year to include girls in the under-15 and U13 age groups and secondary schools’ pupils.

Organiser Peter Vincenti said: ‘Nothing changes for the boys, it is open to players who are registered with an under-14 Jersey Football Combination club with a maximum number of 18 per club.

‘Due to the changes in age restrictions in girls football this season the competition is open to registered players in the U15 and U13 divisions, again with a maximum of 18 per club.

‘Schools have been invited because we are aware that there are children who play schools football and can take a penalty but who are effectively excluded because they are not registered with a Jersey club.

‘Therefore we have decided that up to 18 entrants will be accepted from each Island secondary school with the onus being on schools to only put forward the names of individuals who meet the age group requirements of the competition rules.’ Schools will be asked to run their own shoot-outs to get their representatives.

Players can only represent their school or club in the main competition.

Qualifying rounds will be held at St Peter FC’s Ken Huelin Memorial Junior Pitch on Saturday mornings, from 12 November onwards, with the semi-finals and final at Springfield prior to the Alex Scott Trophy final on 16 March 2006.

All competitors will take five penalties before, if needed, going into a sudden-death shoot-out to determine a group winner.

Shoot-outs will be officiated by members of the Jersey Football Referees’ Association.
