FOUR members of the public were praised for their bravery and a group of police officers were thanked for their professionalism at a ceremony at police HQ at Rouge Bouillon yesterday.

Police chief Graham Power said: ‘These awards are recognition of work and actions that are beyond what should normally be expected from members of the public and the police, and for this I congratulate and thank you all.

‘The awards demonstrate the dedication, professionalism, duty and commitment of police officers and police staff in Jersey and the bravery and public-spirited nature of the people of the Island.

All are worthy of recognition.’ Home Affairs president Senator Wendy Kinnard said: ‘Everyone receiving a certificate has shown great strength of character and determination in supporting fellow members of the community and protecting the rights of all.

I have been greatly impressed by the depth of the courage they have displayed, but I have been particularly moved by the actions of those who found themselves involved in the two tragic events which resulted in the premature, untimely and cruel deaths of two members of our community.

‘The intervention and support made by those award winners have, I am sure, been invaluable in providing some solace to the families of both Miss Burns and Mr Christon at a time when their loss and pain is immeasurable.

‘I hope that in some small way they can find comfort in knowing just how much of a difference they have made to the lives of others, not least the little boy whose life was saved, and the fast apprehension of the perpetrator of the attack on Tracy Burns.’
