Politicians’ interests are kept off internet

Friday 2nd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

THE expanded Register of States Members Interests will not be published on the internet after all, after an 11th hour request.

The Privileges and Procedures Committee have stepped back from their plans to open the document on the internet and wider publication after a last-minute intervention from an unnamed States Member and will amend the Standing Orders they lodged just a month ago.

Now the expanded register will not be put on the internet, or published any further than the copy held in the States Bookshop, and available to public inspection.

Privileges agreed to change their plans at their meeting yesterday, with president Deputy Roy Le Hérissier saying they had to balance openness with protection for Members.

They say they will look at the matter again shortly.
