Senatorial election: 12 days left to register
Friday 2nd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
ISLANDERS have just 12 days to register to vote in the Senatorial election.
Earlier this year it was estimated that 23,000 Islanders were not registered, despite holding the necessary two-year residency entitlement.
Policy and Resources’ Communications Unit have embarked on a £30,000 voter registration drive along with Privileges and Procedures marketing firm Image Group to drive the figure up, and to make sure that more of those registered make it to the polls.
Although it is not clear how many people have taken advantage of the ‘Register, Vote, Count’ campaign, Privileges and Procedures Committee president Deputy Roy Le Hérissier said a much higher turnout was needed in the run-up to this year’s critical elections.
Posters, leaflets and stickers have been placed in shops, pubs and restaurants, and banners have been put up around the town, and at popular public events.
The campaign has also included a mobile voter registration booth, which has been placed around King Street during weekday lunch-hours, and other events.
