Special tribute for man who tended Almorah
Friday 2nd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
A SPECIAL mark of respect was paid yesterday to Eddie Nicolle (88), whose family have cared for graves in St Helier for three generations.
Mr Nicolle, who died on Monday 22 August, was the last in the line of his family who kept the graves at Almorah Cemetery in good condition and dealt with burial arrangements.
As the cortège with Mr Nicolle’s coffin, which was pulled by two white horses, passed in front of the Town Hall on its way to the funeral in St Mark’s Church, the Constable, Simon Crowcroft, and staff members stood on the steps in silence.
The Nicolle family have been associated with the care of graves at Almorah since the middle of the 19th Century, Mr Nicolle’s grandfather having started working there when it opened in 1854.
Born in the lodge at Almorah in 1917, Eddie Nicolle lived there until he moved to St Ewolds residential home a couple of years ago.
