States Members attend Fiji conference

Friday 2nd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

THE Bailiff and three States Members are in Fiji for a conference with politicians from around the Commonwealth.

Sir Philip Bailhache is part of a delegation including Senators Jean Le Maistre and Philip Ozouf and Deputy Maurice Dubras to the islands for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference which runs from tomorrow to 10 September.

Deputy Dubras, who is leading the delegation, said it was a useful opportunity which came at no cost to the Island.

‘Although the journey to Fiji is a long one, we are fortunate that the full costs of our travel are paid by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Headquarters and we will be hosted at no cost to Jersey by the Fiji branch during our time in the islands,’ he said.

‘It is a great honour for Jersey that Senator Le Maistre is currently vice-chairman of the executive committee as Jersey has, for many years, played a very active part in the activities of the CPA.’ Senator Le Maistre is attending his final CPA function before he steps down from the States at the end of the year.

He is now the regional representative on the executive committee and senior representative for the British Islands and Mediterranean Region, and will be chairing both the regional meeting in Fiji and the programme planning committee.
