Who’s who on the pub trade rich list

A NUMBER of multi-millionaires with strong Island connections appear prominently on a rich list compiled by licensing trade magazine The Publican.

In fourth spot, with an estimated fortune of £730m, is the chairman of Northern Trust Group, Trevor Hemmings, who owns a £160m stake in the Scottish & Newcastle group.

Mr Hemmings retains a home in Beaumont but pubs and property continue to dominate his portfolio.

However, he has made his first venture into retail with the acquisition of Pondel Mill, a Skipton-based home furnishing retailer.

Although he stayed in fourth spot on the list, his fortune may grow as he has plans to transform Blackpool – he owns the famous Tower – into a gaming centre if changes to gambling legislation are approved.

A spokesman for Mr Hemmings said that the list was compiled by the magazine and they estimated the fortunes of those who appear on it.
