Goulds dominate novice division
Saturday 3rd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
SISTERS Phoebe and Tabitha Gould again dominated the novice division in round three of the AIB/Laneez Surfing Junior Series last weekend.
In good weather and a steady two-foot swell, age and strength determined the result with Phoebe winning from Tabitha with Leo Carney third and Kitty Brewer fourth.
Rising star Jenna Kleis seemed to lose her touch in semi-final two leaving eight-year-old Carney and five-year-old Brewer to surf against the Gould sisters.
Ben Bates (9) was in winning form in the U10s.
Catching waves by himself he produced stylish turns on his Nutz surfboard to win from Phoebe Gould, Gus Brewer and Willoughby Brewer respectively.
The U14 and U16 division had two U12s competing in preparation for the British Junior Championships.
Bradley Ferguson (11) reached both finals with Nathan Elms beating his older brother in the U14 final, where critical manoeuvres executed with speed and efficiency were the key to the duo’s successes.
Other standouts in these two divisions were Guernsey’s Jacob Warr and Jake Powell.
Warr powered his way through the U16 semi with controlled board speed and off-the-top manoeuvres.
This combination of power and skill continued in the final and he was the deserved winner.
Powell, Ferguson and Joe Baker were second, third and fourth respectively.
In the U14 division, U12 Nathan Elms produced an excellent performance to beat Jake Powell and older brother, Jake Elms.
Despite Powell’s top to bottom manoeuvres, Nathan Elms powered to victory.
Powell was second, Jake Elms third and Ferguson fourth.
The team selected for the Billabong British Junior Championships, at Bude on 17 and 18 September, has been selected as follows: Fabian Baker, Delia Baker, Josh Letherbarrow, Grace Davies, Justin Faulkner, Stephanie Seymour, Liam McFarling, Bradley Ferguson, Jacob Warr (Guernsey), Matt Chapman, Joe Baker, Alex Vibert, Jake Elms and Jack Seymour.
