Treading the old boards

Saturday 3rd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

THE legendary annual Mal-Function reunion took place on August Bank Holiday Monday in perfect conditions.

The fun event was extremely well attended with over 30 entrants competing on original Malibu surfboards from the 60s – extremely heavy and much harder to ride than their modern counterparts.

Nevertheless favourites Gordon and Nina Blake, Andre Le Geyt visiting from the UK, and Steve Harewood were all knocked out in the semis! The surf was a perfect offshore 1-3 ft and there were stunning performances, especially by Matt Chapman and some of the other juniors.

Results: 1st Ladies – Grace Davies; 1st Open – Nick Channing; 2nd Ladies – Julianne Dale; 2nd Open – Nick Trower; 1st Junior – Matt Chapman; 3rd Open – Joe Davies; 2nd Junior – Bradley Ferguson; 4th Open – Matt Chapman; 1st Masters – David Blake; Best Wipe-out – Simon Voisin; 2nd Masters – Jeremy Oxenden; Best Drop In – Nick Trower; Best Fancy Dress – Nick Channing.

lThe event was sponsored by Earth Wind and Water and organised by the Jersey Longboard Riders Association (see www.jerseylongboarders.com) lThe trophies were made by Alan Bailey and donated by Earth Wind and Water.
