Jersey suits Green to a tee

Monday 5th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

FORMER Kent county golf champion Steve Green has joined the Les Ormes club – prompted by his many fond memories of the Island when he visited as a pro.

Green, a professional for 11 years, was Kent Open champion in 1996 and won the Kent PGA Championship in 2003.

He then retained the title last year.

He has boosted the Les Ormes teaching professionals team to three.

Said Green (35): ‘I’ve been here eight times to play in tournaments – including the Jersey championship at the Royal and then at Les Mielles.

I liked the Island and the people were nice so I thought I’d like to give it a go.

It’s a great place and I love it.’ He comes in alongside Andy Chamberlain, who has been at the club for eight years, and Steve Whiteside who arrived four years ago.

Chamberlain said: ‘We needed someone of Steve’s ability.

We’ve got probably the biggest junior programme in the country – we get around 250 youngsters each year from the schools and we’ve got the best teaching facilities in the Island.

He’s played at a high level and he’ll be a great asset to the club.’
