CI women win one and lose one in inter-counties

Wednesday 7th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY’S Ladies 35 tennis team won one match and and lost another in the inter-county championships at the prestigious Devonshire Park, Eastbourne.

The CI team of Anne Ledwidge and Shelagh Herbert from Jersey and Guernsey’s Denny Griffiths and skipper Claire Randell competed alongside counties from all over Britain and finished second in their three-county group.

First they played the Isle of Man team, who had slightly higher singles ratings.

Griffiths got off to a great start to win the first set 6-0.

But her opponent improved as the match went on and took the second 7-5 and the decider 10-8.

Randell then used her serve and volley game to beat the Isle of Man No 1 in straight sets.

Ledwidge and Herbert lost their first doubles 6-2, 6-2 to a pair of Manx left-handers.

But the next time they met they used serve-and-volley tactics to win 6-4, 6-4.

The Guernsey pair battled hard in the final match, winning the first set 6-3, then losing the second 6-4.

But Rendell and Griffiths continued to attack the net to win the last 10-8.

Their next match was against a strong Cambridgeshire side.

Griffiths was beaten 6-4, 6-1 but Randell overcame the Cambridge No 1 6-2, 7-6 after an exciting second set tiebreak.

Ledwidge and Herbert went down 6-1, 6-3 against an experienced and unorthodox pair and the CI went on to lose the two remaining rubbers.
