Deputy steps into café row

Wednesday 7th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

TOURISM Board chairman Deputy Lyndon Farnham has stepped into the row over the requirement for toilets at the new café at Broad Street.

He is appalled that Café Toulouse is being prevented from opening because Health officials insist that toilets need to be provided for workers and clients.

The Deputy is urging that common sense should prevail.

He has spoken out because the Tourism Development Fund, which he chairs, has made a contribution towards the redevelopment of Broad Street.

‘This is bureaucracy getting in the way of progress.

No doubt Health will make a strong argument on technical grounds, but I think it is a mean decision and I shall be urging them to reconsider,’ he said.

The Deputy said that there were many beach kiosks in the Island and food outlets in squares and town centres throughout Europe which did not have toilets.
