Le Quesne – at the double
Wednesday 7th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY claimed a Le Quesne Trophy inter-insular double in Guernsey at the weekend.
Jersey’s ladies have struggled in recent years with four defeats in five competitions.
But this time they won by 16 shots at Corbet Field while the men came away with a 12-shot victory at Delancey Park.
And the Jersey contingent continued their form in the knockouts as the men recorded a clean sweep – with Alan Shaw celebrating his 64th birthday by taking the CI singles title for the first time and Jamie MacDonald won his third Under-25 title on the trot.
Meanwhile the ladies won three but lost four.
In the Le Quesne Pam de Gruchy’s four inflicted an 19-9 defeat on the top Sarnian Alison Merrien’s team.
Merrien’s husband Ian gained some consolation when his family four beat Allan Quémard’s quartet 32-9.
But apart from another fours defeat it was Jersey all the way in the men’s.
In the CI knockouts at Delancey Park the ladies started with the fours team of skip Janette Fox, Liz Cole, Eileen Vowden and Yvonne de Gruchy losing 26-20.
The Sarnian ladies then beat Betty Carré, Jean Holmes, Gail Boswell and Josie Gregory in the drawn fours.
Jean Small stopped the rot in the Over 60s when she beat Peggy Fish 21-3 but Fish went on to win the Over 70s 21-15 against Roselle Mauger.
The ladies triples side of Carol Allen, Gean O’Neil and skip Karina Bisson won 22-12 and Gaynor Thomas and Sue Dingle had a solid 19-13 win in the pairs.
But in the singles Bisson was beaten 21-11 by Anne Simon.
The mixed pairs of Tim Murphy and Jean Cooper lost 21-8 to the leading Guernsey pair of Ian and Ali Merrien.
But the men had a much better day as they won all their matches – although some were very close.
The triples was won 22-11 by skip Thomas Greechan, Simon Brown and MacDonald and Tim Knight had a 21-12 victory over Ralph Deacon.
Dicky Allen led his team of Will Waymouth, Con O’Callaghan and Terry Allen to an excellent 19-12 win in the fours and Jersey pairs champs Stevie Hind and Peter Le Long, who were leading 15-9 after 16 ends held on well to come through 15-13.
When Shaw came onto the green his opponent Geoff Savident looked to be heading for another title as he led 12-5 after 10 ends.
But then Shaw picked up three singles and a three to recover to 12-11.
The Guernseyman then went 15-11 up after 17 ends and, although Shaw picked up a three to get to get back to 15-14, he fell behind again 19-14.
On the 21st end Savident was holding the game with two.
But Shaw, with one wood left, trailed the jack a foot to pick up three to make it 19-17 to the Guernseyman.
On the 22nd end Shaw was holding three but Savident got the shot with his last wood.
With his last bowl Shaw trailed the jack again to pick up four and win.
The Under-25 singles was another great game with MacDonald facing Matt Le Ber.
Le Ber went 12-4 ahead after 10 ends but MacDonald hit back to make it all square at 13-13 before going behind again at 19-15 at 24 ends.
It was 19-19 three ends later and then on the 29th end MacDonald picked up the winning shot to triumph 21-19.
