Express boys punish Pirates

Thursday 8th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

FIFTEEN men’s teams entered the Vision Express beach volleyball fours tournament at the Gunsite last weekend with the sponsors’ side beating Pugwash Pirates in the final.

But only four women’s teams turned out for the ladies tournament – also won by the Vision Express team.

Vision Express Men reached the final despite having to play two of their group games on Sunday with only three players when Steve Hopper, visiting from New Zealand, got injured.

For the final Tim Bond, who had played for them on Saturday, returned to the team alongside Paul Gartshore, Marchin Migas and Paul Adamson.

They went on to win in three sets, 22-24, 21-15, 21-15.

Despite the low entry for the ladies tournament and the fact that the games were played in heavy rain and thunder the quality was high.

The Vision Express Ladies squad of Nicki Appleton, Michelle Hervieu, Anita Othman, Jo Carter and Julie Sangan beat Am I Bothered (with Attitude) 21-14, 21-19 in the final.

Mens placings: 1, Vision Express Men; 2, Pugwash Pirates; 3, Team Shank; 4, The RSPCV; 5, Gunsite Muppets; 6, Under No Pressure; 7, Licence to Drive; 8, Last Chance Saloon; 9, All Stars; 10, Under Pressure.

Ladies: 1, Vision Express Ladies; 2, Am I Bothered (with Attitude); 3, Goldilocks & the 3 Bears; 4, Sex on the Beach.

The final tournaments for the 2005 season, the Vision Express Ladies and Mens 2s, are being held at the Gunsite this weekend.
