Grouville bounce back to beat St Peter in cup

Thursday 8th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

GROUVILLE battled back from two goals down against St Peter to win a place in the next round of the Jeremie Cup at a fog-shrouded Les Quennevais last night.

A superb Peter Vincenti volley from 18 yards on the half hour had given the Saints a 1-0 half time lead.

And, although Grouville had had slightly the better of the play, it it seemed their was no way back when Vincenti scored again in the 57th minute.

Amid a storm of protest the referee pointed to the penalty spot after a Josh Collins tackle on Ryan Durand.

Vincenti stepped up to take it but Hickling saved only for the ball to rebound to the St Peter man who found the net.

But in the 72nd minute Grouville were awarded a free kick and Russell Le Feuvre’s right-footed shot was blocked by the St Peter wall.

The ball came back to Le Feuvre who found the bottom corner from 20 yards with his other foot.

As the minutes ticked away Grouville’s cause began to look lost as Saints ‘keeper Gareth Bailey made two flying saves, first pushing away a Liame Walshe free-kick that seemed bound for the top corner and then repeating the feat from a Toni Cardoso 25-yarder.

But then, in the 86th minute, Grouville got a free kick, the ball was delivered into the goalmouth and Collins equalised from six yards.

Right on the death St Peter might have grabbed victory when a Ryan Le Cornu shot was deflected and Hickling was forced to change direction to save.

After five minutes of extra time Grouville were ahead when Alex Jefferies bagged his first goal for his new club in a goalmouth scramble.

And in the 100th minute sub John Kiersey made it 4-2 with a shot on the angle from 12 yards.

Said Grouville manager Ian Horswell: ‘The fog made it very difficult for both sides, but especially the officials.

‘I was very pleased with my players.

‘They showed a lot of character to come back from two goals down.

Now we’re all looking forward to the next round.’
