Jersey athletes host 120-strong Guernsey squad in inter-insular

Thursday 8th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

THE athletics season comes to a climax this weekend with a travelling Guernsey party of over 120 determined to reclaim the coveted Combined Trophy from Jersey Spartan.

All the age groups are represented and the FB Fields is sure to see some great action on Saturday and Sunday.

Guernsey IAC travel with a strong senior men’s squad.

As ever their talisman will be Dale Garland, now an established Great Britain international and one of the country’s top multi-eventers.

He is still, however a dyed-in-the-wool Guernseyman, and will be giving it everything on Saturday afternoon in as many events as he can manage.

Guernsey look formidable on the track with Lee Merrien, Tom Druce, Lee Garland and Tim Coates threatening to do serious damage.

Jersey will hope to rescue some points in the field through throwers Paul Derrien and Russell Price, backed up by juniors Jamie Stevenson and David Felton.

The home side should also do well in the high jump with Irish junior international Simon Phelan teaming up with Jason Fox.

By contrast Guernsey will be badly hit by the absence from the women’s team of Kimberley Goodall and Kylie Robilliard.

Although recovered from illness and injury respectively they have other mainland commitments.

Junior GB international Lauren Thérin leads a youthful but quickly maturing home team which includes serial Island Games medallist Claire Lidster, Commonwealth Games hopeful Jo McGarry, the talented Claire Forbes and several juniors who are now coming of age.

Below the senior ranks there will be plenty of young talent on show from both islands.

Jersey are arguably stronger across the junior age groups at the present time but only points on the board will prove this to be the case and the green hoops of Guernsey are never to be taken lightly.

The action commences on both days at 12.30 pm.

The seniors, U15s and U11s compete on Saturday and the U17s and U13s on Sunday.

Admission is free and the Jersey Spartan clubhouse will be open for refreshments throughout the weekend.

Jersey Spartan AC are sponsored by Royal Bank of Canada (Channel Islands) Limited.
