JERSEY SPARTAN AC convincingly held on to the inter-insulars honours against Guernsey IAC at the FB Fields over the weekend.

A clean sweep of victories in yesterday’s U17 and U15 matches gave Jersey a handsome Combined Trophy triumph of 146 points (689.5 to 543.5), with the Sarnians’ only joy coming through their Dale Garland-driven win in the senior men’s event on Saturday.

There were several championship records and a host of personal bests achieved on an excellent two days of intense – but hearteningly friendly – competition.

n WHIPPET RACING In a thrilling final David Lawson’s Cadbury just beating his sister Capuccina, owned by Steve Lawson, in the 50-yard race for the Jersey Pedigree Whippet Racing Club’s Dash Champion Trophy.

Third was brother Coyote, with Jenny Thomas’s Jetstream fourth.

Top veteran was Apache, father of all four finalists, and four-times winner of the trophy.

But in the Canus Supremus Trophy over 200 yards Capuccina gained revenge by forcing Cadbury into second with Coyote and Jetstream again third and fourth.

Winner of the consolation race was Alison and John Garnier’s Magic.

n CYCLING Vincent Peron won the Jersey Cycling Association’s annual hill climb championship for the second year running in a time of 2 min 7 sec – three seconds off his personal best.

Mountain biker Robin Ovenden was second place in 2 min 15 sec and Mike Harris third and first vet in 2 min 21 sec.

The first lady home was Norma Mahony with Peter Ilton first junior.

n SOFTBALL Jersey won both inter-insular games in Guernsey at the weekend to retain their CI titles.

Jersey A won 10-6 and the B side 12-4.

In the Uptons Jersey Division I champs Barclays beat their counterparts Red Onion Sox 14-8 but the Island’s Division II winners Serco Cubs lost 20-4 to Doyle Motors Rookies.

n HOCKEY The Stripes side, led by Willi Sutton, won yesterday’s round-robin Ernst & Young Badgers development tournament at Les Quennevais from the Brocks and the Snouts who shared second place with the Badgers fourth.

Each side had a mixture of men, women, boys and girls with an age range of 7 to over 50.

n SWIMMING Richard Flambard won the four-mile Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club’s Open Championship senior race in St Catherine’s Bay on Saturday in a time of 1 hr 32 min 12 sec.

The ladies race was won by Sarah-Jane Stirling in 1 hr 53 min 19 sec.

n MOTOCROSS Damian Bowyer clinched three titles – 250 cc, grand final champion and overall champion – in the JMCLCC meeting at Sorel Point yesterday.

Kilian Dorey won the AI Gardens trophy of the day in the big wheel 85 cc class with Dominic Cauvain second and Guernsey’s Luke Lesbirel third.

n SHOOTING Chris Cotillard won the St John’s annual Parish Prize Shoot at Crabbé yesterday with a score of 103 out of a maximum of 105 – after beating his dad Michael in a tie shoot! It was the second tie shoot between the pair: in the first Michael came out on top to win the 300-yard trophy n DARTS Office A’s Mark James beat Tony Maddock of Robin Hood A 3-2 in the singles final of the Tradesmans Summer Darts League finals night at the Royal Hotel, David Place on Saturday.

Mike Oaks (Tivoli A) beat Kevin Frain (Robin Hood A) in the Division I singles; Steff Lindberg (Bridge A) won the Division II title by beating Stewart McGrogan (Tivoli A) 3-1 and Martin Casey (Office B) the Division III crown with a 3-0 win over Ben Querée of the Trinity.

n ATHLETICS Jersey Spartan’s Dave Hallden won the Alderney half-marathon on Saturday in a time of 1 hr 25 min 43 sec.

He also won the veteran men’s trophy.

First woman home was Alderney’s Nikki Neal in 1.31.35.

n SHOOTING Ashley Le Sech was High Gun and Class A winner in the Crabbé Clay Pigeon Club’s 50-bird sporting competition with a score of 43 ex 50.

Wayne Shales took Class B with 34 ex 50 and James Lawrence Class C with 22 ex 50.

n GOLF Mark Le Boutillier won the East Surrey Cup at La Moye with a nett 68 off his 8 handicap.

Paul Mee was second with 69 off 8 and Matthew Nicolle third on 69 off 6.

n SAILING Vince Smith’s Jackflash took the Best Boat trophy in the Jersey Telecom Regatta.

Lydia Carter’s Low Fly won the best junior boat title and Toybox, owned by R Sugden and Partners, the Summerland Salver for the best boat on points n MOTORSPORT Winners of the Jersey Classic and Modern Trials Club trials at Broadlands, St Peter: A Route: Mac du Feu; B Route: Graham du Feu (Pre 65); C Route Chris Fox; Pre 65: Archie du Feu; Junior A: Richard Vibert; Junior B: Oliver Laurens; Junior C: Christopher Vibert.

n BOWLS Con O’Callaghan regained the St Brelade BC men’s singles trophy, which he last won in 2003 when he beat Peter Mavity in the final on saturday.

Gean O’Neil made it a hat-trick of ladies titles when she beat Lorraine Murphy.

n ANGLING Mark André captured the Jack Gavey Trophy in the 25th Jersey Conger Festival with a speciman weighing in at 36 lb 4 oz.

Ali watts was second with a fish of 28 lb and Danny Le Merrer third on 18 in 12 oz.

n HOCKEY Jersey ladies won the inaugural Inter-Islands Tournament held in Guernsey.

Losing 4-1 to the hosts in the final, Jamey Herbert inspired a dramatic fightback that saw Jersey clinch victory 6-4.

The tournament also featured the Isle of Man and Clifton Ladies.
