Wake surf champions

JERSEY has two world champion wake surfers!
Jacky Hall and Gary Read beat all-comers in the amateur section of the World Wake Surf Championships in Konocto Harbour, California.
‘It’s not sunk in yet – I still find it hard to believe, I’m still in disbelief!’ said Jacky when she arrived back in the Island.
‘We’ve been training so hard all year for this event, trying to master all the new manoeuvres.
We decided our only chance was to go for broke – so that’s what we did and it paid off!’ Gary agreed, ‘We’ve both been practising 360′s and aerials and they are really hard to pull off because you have to contend with all the variables that come with wake surfing in the sea.
‘But the competition was held on a lake and every day the water was the same .

like sheet glass and no wind.
It made it so much easier for us.’ Jacky and Gary were also lucky that the boat used for the championship was a Centurion, the same as their own.
Said Gary: ‘The competition wave was virtually identical to the one thrown up by our own boat although it was bigger and provided extra momentum to launch turns .

it was classic! Now the couple, who live in St Brelade, are enthusiastic about returning to America next year to defend their titles or maybe enter the Open which has cash prizes.
lJacky was sponsored by Jersey Post, Abbey International, Laneez Surf Shop and Exel Wetsuits.
Gary would also like to thank Laneez and Exel Wetsuits.
