Simpson repeats his 65 but faces twin threat
Thursday 15th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
PAUL SIMPSON repeated his first-round 65 in the Jersey Players Championship at Les Mielles yesterday to total a ten-under 130 and share the lead with Ben Willman.
Course-record holder Simpson got off to a real flyer with an eagle, birdie, birdie.
Another birdie at the ninth had him turn in 31, with the beating of his course record 62 a real possibility.
However, a dropped shot at the tenth and just one more birdie at the par-5 13th gave him a 65.
The Willman twins, Ben and Grant, made their charge to relegate Ant Tarchetti (67, 65) and the evergreen Glenn Ralph (65, 67) to joint fourth on eight-under.
Grant narrowly failed to join Simpson at the top of the board by a single shot in shooting seven birdies in two halves of 32 for an excellent 64, following his first-round 67.
Not to be out-done, brother Ben matched the 64 with six birdies.
His two-round score of 130 sees him play in the final round of the PGA championship at Les Mielles today.
First-round pace setter Craig Cowper, having fired 11 straight pars in his second round birdied the12th but a disastrous triple bogey eight at the 13th saw his challenge fade.
He finished on 135, trailling the leaders by five shots.
Following the tight grouping of scores after round one of the Pro Am tournament first-round leaders Alex Mollin, Danny Paxton and Helena Sumner fired a second-round 127 (-13) to total 243 (-37).
This established a target which, having been matched by the Red Hot Woods team of Sue Evans, Sarah McCall and Trevor Simon, would be beaten by the Hong Tigers combination of Tony Chan, Gabriel Ho and Kevin Lau.
The Tigers were led to a score of 119 (-21) to total 239 (-41) to win the 36-hole two-day tournament.
