WEB to stay for 10 years
Thursday 15th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
THE Waterfront Enterprise Board has received the overwhelming support of States Members to continue with its vision to create a ‘world-class development’.
Despite claims that senior politicians were acting as ‘salesmen for developers’, the States agreed by 36 votes to eight that WEB should remain in charge of the waterfront transformation for ten more years.
The yes voters implored Islanders and fellow Members to look to a bright future and allow WEB to get on with it, while trusting professional planners to decide what was appropriate for the reclaimed land.
Eight Members argued against a Policy and Resources proposition to grant WEB ten more years to continue with its vision to develop the waterfront.
Senator Paul Le Claire initially led their charge, tabling an amendment to limit the quango’s remit to two more years.
He argued that the P & R proposal would tie the hands of the States for a decade to influence what could be built.
‘We have lost control of the ship,’ he said.
‘We have lost control of the helm.
The direction we agreed to go in is nowhere in sight.’
