Herbert helps England U21s recover in Hockey World Cup
Friday 16th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY’S Beckie Herbert played a full part in England’s morale boosting thumping of Zimbabwe in the U21 World Cup in Chile yesterday.
Playing in Santiago, 19-year-old Herbert, a full England international, stayed on for the full Group A match in midfield helping her team to a 13-0 victory.
The scoreline matched that of the fancied Holland team who had played Zimbabwe on the opening day.
England’s shock first-day 4-2 defeat to the unfancied and inexperienced USA was put into context by the Americans’ 2-2 draw with Holland yesterday.
England are now virtually certain to qualify for the second stage, whatever the outcome of tomorrow night’s final group match against Holland, but they desperately need a victory to keep them in overall contention – results against fellow qualifiers are the only ones that are carried forward into the six-team stage-two groups.
