Cruises to offer tourism a boost?

JERSEY has great potential as a cruising destination, according to a top industry salesman.

The head of sales for P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Cunard and Ocean Village, Giles Hawke, is currently in the Island meeting local travel agents.

He said: ‘Guernsey is already a popular cruising destination.

But Jersey is much better known, being bigger and because of Bergerac.

There is also much more to do here and 2,000 passengers could lose themselves much more easily, so it would make a wonderful cruising destination.’ However, Mr Hawke claimed it would not yet be feasible.

‘Cruise liners stop in Guernsey because they can get much closer to the shore.

They don’t visit Jersey, because they have to park three miles out.

The time it would take to ferry all the passengers to and from the Island, seriously reduces the time people would get in the Island and in bad weather, they wouldn’t be able to get across at all.’
