Island trio progress in inter-insular cups
Monday 19th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
IT was a cracking day on the football field for Jersey clubs on Saturday with a maximum three victories in inter-island competition.
Trinity brushed aside Guernsey Sylvans 6-1 at the Riley Field in the Wheway Cup; First Tower defeated Guernsey Priaulx League leaders Belgraves 3-1 at the Track in the Jeremie Cup while Jersey Wanderers chalked up their first win of the season, 2-1 away to Guernsey Rangers in the WJ Collins Trophy.
Team manager Joel Avery nodded Sylvans ahead from a corner only for Trinity to respond to lead 2-1 at the break.
It was one-way traffic after the interval as Joe Morley and Adam Reid’s side played some good football and consistently hurt Sylvans with their pace.
John Beatson (two), Jon Fitzmaurice, Danny Craven and Paul Banahan hit the target together with substitute Andy Le Tocq who scored an own goal.
Reid said: ‘It was a great result and a great team performance.
We kept our discipline well, we didn’t get too excited going behind and eventually we scored some fine goals.
‘Referee Dave Goldsmith had a fine game on his final appearance in the Island and we wish him well for his trip home to Australia.
‘We have a lot of competition for places this season and we will be making changes regularly to give everyone a game.
We made five on Saturday from last week and the players are happy with what we are doing.’ Cup-holders Trinity play last season’s beaten finalists, Guernsey Northerners, in the second round on 29 October.
Tower also came from a goal down to defeat Bels, who have dropped just two points from five Priaulx matches.
Tower boss Dave Philpott said: ‘Bels are a young side; they work very hard but once we got our second goal the belief went out of their play.
‘We had a good shape; we defended very well and we were always dangerous on the counter-attack.’ Scott Walsh scored twice after Chris Conning netted Tower’s equaliser shortly before half time.
Wanderers scored their first goals of the season, both by Jon Southern, to beat Rangers 2-1 in Guernsey in the Collins Trophy.
Wanderers manager Daryn Noble said: ‘We deserved to win, we played well and never looked like losing.
It was great to get a goal and a victory although it was at a cost as we lost two players with head injuries.
‘Danny Squires, Kevan and Neal Crowell and Ashley Scott were excellent as a unit in defence while Chris Corfield gave a good account of himself playing as a striker.
‘Chris won a lot of balls in the air for us, he made it awkward for their defenders.’ Rozel Rovers joined Wanderers and St Ouen in the Collins semis – together with Guernsey’s Bels or Vale Rec – after they won by the odd-goal in seven at Le Couvent against St Brelade.
Jerry O’Shea (two), Stuart Truscott and Scott Healey were on target for Rozel and Fintan Kennedy, Ian Crocker and Liam Sutton for St Brelade.
