World hockey hopes end

Monday 19th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

TWO narrow defeats over the weekend shattered the World Cup hopes of England’s U21 ladies hockey team in Santiago, Chile.

Jersey’s full England international Beckie Herbert played a full game in both matches, which now has the national squad pointless at the bottom of their second-round group with no chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Their final round-one group match against Holland was decided by an early goal from prolific striker Maarje Paumen on Saturday night.

Although England, finishing third, still moved forward to the next stage, their chances of further progess were slim indeed, as they carried no points forward.

Spain struck twice in the second half when they played England yesterday, in the first of the additional matches, to end all hopes of a revival.

England finish off their group matches against Chile tomorrow and Australia on Wednesday.
