Visitors step forward for walking week

VISITORS from all over the world are taking part in Jersey Tourism’s autumn walking week festival.

With eight free guided walks every day until Sunday, Tourism say that each walk is averaging about 30 walkers.

Today, Blue Badge guides were enlightening visitors and Islanders about organic farming, Jersey’s long-gone shipbuilding industry, maritime heritage and myths, rose-growing, the rich biodiversity of St Ouen’s Bay and folklore, myths and legends.

For eager walkers it was day three of Arthur Lamy’s and Remi Couriard’s now famous round-Island walk – a five-stage marathon around the coast which is attracting more than 40 walkers each day, with a hard core of 20, from a variety of countries including Germany, Brazil, Norway, Australia and the UK, the oldest of whom is a sprightly 82.

Mr Couriard said that this was the fifth year running they had led the round-Island walk, and the party included five walkers who had taken part in each one.

‘The walk is really Arthur’s, so it’s my job to warm them up beforehand and bring up the rear,’ he said.

‘They are pumped up now – full of enthusiasm with lots of energy and excitement.

People, including locals, just don’t realise there is so much to see and learn about Jersey.

It really is the centre of the universe.’
