Union plan rally against new employment law

Thursday 22nd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

ALL Transport and General Workers Union members are being rallied to a mass protest in the Royal Square next week.

The gathering is to continue the protest against the Employment Relations Law and the codes of practice contained within it.

As well as hearing from regional secretary Andy Frampton and employment law expert John Hendy, union officials will be handing a petition to States Members as they break for lunch on Tuesday at 12.30 pm.

There is a meeting this evening between union officials and the Employment and Social Security Committee in a bid to thrash out the differences between them on the codes of practice.

Regional industrial organiser Nick Corbel said: ‘There are still some sticking points for us, for example recognition.

‘If an employee was to be represented by a union in the UK, the employer must abide by that and recognise us, otherwise they can be liable to court action.

‘There is nothing in Jersey which prevents an employer from recognising the union.’
