A cup first for Tower ladies

FIRST Tower United ladies won the Zenith Trust Cup for the first time at Springfield last night.

Goals from Louise Vandervliet, Kerry Sauvage and Lisa McLaughlin – transferred from St Paul’s just this week – saw off plucky St Peter 3-0, writes Andy Bradshaw.

Tower manager Geoff Vandervliet said: ‘It was a good game and another fine advert for ladies football.

I felt we dominated it.

Lisa was excellent playing behind our twin strikers while Serena Guthrie was outstanding in midfield.

‘Serena made some excellent runs.

Nobody appears capable of knocking her off the ball.

In fact, all teams are frightened of her because of her strength and pace.

‘Lisa is a former Island player and she got stronger and stronger as the game progressed.

She hit a post in the first half before scoring the third goal, which was a team goal with many players contributing before she tucked it away.

‘St Peter fought hard.

Sarah Gavey and Jo Fuller worked tirelessly in midfield and attack respectively while Candice Sharples had a good game in their defence.

‘Lauren Jéhan had an excellent game playing sweeper for us for the first time and she had excellent support from Nikki Warren and Claire Le Quesne.

Between them they restricted St Peter to only a few opportunities.’ St Peter striker Jo Fuller said: ‘Tower played ever so well.

They dominated the midfield and passed the ball confidently.

We are a young side with just two senior players so we have something to build on for the future.

‘Stacey Brée made some good saves for us while Lisa Godinho impressed on the right.

We struggled to get the ball forward early and that restricted us creating chances.’ Louise Vandervliet beat her marker to fire home Tower’s opener from 18 yards and before half time Kerry Sauvage made it 2-0, following a corner, with a left-foot strike from the edge of the penalty area.
