Davies rides to notable double
Friday 23rd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY surfer Joe Davies recorded a notable double last weekend by winning the Open and Junior titles at the 9plus Longboard Classic in Sennen.
The 18-year-old former De La Salle College student took part in the British Longboard Union third round event in Cornwall, near Land’s End, before travelling on to Cardiff University where he will study chemistry.
Against the top ranked UK surfers, Davies excelled to win two titles and defeat former British and European champions and several highly world-ranked surfers along the way.
Davies won his early rounds in both divisions on the opening day before the waves diminished and the contest was rescheduled for the next morning.
The contest site was bathed in glorious sunshine on the Sunday and blessed with small clean waves.
Davies, on his new Guts 9 ft 4 in noserider, specially shaped for him, surfed through five rounds of 25-minute heats before then getting back on his board to win the back-to-back finals.
Davies has had a good summer locally and on the mainland but his best result was in Biarritz at the International surf festival where he finished second-best junior.
Directly after that contest Davies discussed his future with Bear surf team manager Chris Griffiths in an attempt to take his surfing to the next level.
Bill Davies, Joe’s father, said: ‘Gul International’s Tom Crawford, one of Joe’s main sponsors, watched him last weekend and he was impressed.
‘Chris Griffiths also told me that Joe is starting to put consistency with his natural talent, and that he had put on a show of longboarding that was top quality and the spectators were treated to noseriding skills that are up there with the best.’ Davies is supported by Big Verns, Bear Clothing, Guts Surfboards and Gul wetsuits.
