Griggs puts in the hard graft
Friday 23rd September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
POPULAR grafter Trevor Griggs returned to Bedell Cristin Division I action this week to help Squash Pistols overturn All Sports 4-1.
Griggs secured a pulsating 3-2 win over Paul Biddulph in the fourth string match – bringing back a brand of squash missing for the last 18 months.
The string of the night was, however, between No 1s Rob Hickling of Pistols and All Sports’ Paul Frankland.
Both Island representatives were keen to demonstrate their power to the large gallery by hitting the cover off the ball in the first game.
Frankland looked the freshest and was able to take an entertaining first 15-13.
Hickling, however, recovered his composure and showed the greater stamina to win the next three games and the string 3-1.
Current leaders Bedell Cristin were too strong for Alexander Forbes I, overpowering them 3-2, while Ash Shopfitting, although understrength, were also too strong for Harriers, winning 4-1.
Harriers’ Trevor Machin won their first string of the season by beating the unlucky Mark Vibert 3-2.
In Division II OVs moved to the top after beating Chiltern 5-0.
There were, however, no easy games: At first string Nigel Johnson was able to withstand pressure from Bob Biddulph to win the fifth 15-12.
Jeremy Rothwell also soaked up the pressure as Mike Landon took the string into the fifth game, from where Rothwell powered to a 15-8 win.
Leaders before the start, Apsley Road Garage were pushed back into fourth after losing 3-2 to Yo Yo’s.
Siblings Harry and Kate Cadigan were too strong at Nos 1 and 2 and showing no mercy in beating Jonathon Le Maistre and Paul Mottram 3-0 respectively.
Mike Moyse secured things with a routine 3-0 win over Chris McNabb.
In the other match Alexander Forbes II proved too good for Bedell Cristin II, coming through 4-1 winners.
Division I: Bedell Cristin I 51 pts; Squash Pistols 45; Alexander Forbes I 40; Ash Shopfitting 39; All Sports 20; Harriers 7.
Division II: OVs 45; Alexander Forbes II 42; Yo Yo’s 39; Apsley Road Garage 33; Chiltern 32; Bedell Cristin II 27.
