Goal rush takes Saints to summit
Monday 26th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
ST PETER went top of Coca-Cola Combination Division I on Saturday after scoring eight times without reply at home to promoted St Brelade.
Marco Vieira helped himself to a hat-trick while there were singles for Gary Freeman, junior Ryan Le Cornu, Marcus Bailey and Vitor dos Santos together with an own goal.
The Saints, who have played a game more, leap-frogged Jersey Scottish, who were without a game, while Grouville are also on six points following their second victory – 3-0 at St Saviour against St Paul’s.
Toni Cardoso bagged all Grouville’s goals, his first goal coming some 20 seconds after a crossbar prevented St Paul’s taking the lead.
Trinity lost ground after they scored in time added on for stoppages to force a 2-2 draw at the Riley Field against First Tower.
Tower manager Dave Philpott said: ‘We’re all disappointed we didn’t get the three points, we played excellently as a team and Trinity equalised in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
‘It was a cruel blow, we had played so well but we lost our concentration for a second and Danny Craven hurt us with a good header.
‘Trinity couldn’t cope with the pace of our front three and we thoroughly deserved our two-goal lead.
Bradley Russell was excellent in attack and he scored the first with a great lob after Scott Walsh had cut in from the right.
‘Scott was at the heart of our second goal too, Chris Conning stabbing home from five yards at a second opportunity.
Just before half time we allowed Trinity a bit of space and Dave Le Roux took two of our players out before passing to Craven who rounded the goalkeeper to pull a goal back.
‘Second-half Trinity had a lot more possession, they didn’t really create and when they did get behind our defence they found goalkeeper Fabio Fernandes in excellent form too.
‘We’ve had a tough start to the season having played the best five sides in the Channel Islands.
We stuck in there in all the games and have lost just once to Jersey Scottish.
We are playing as a team, our control and passing is good and we are working very hard too.’ Trinity joint-manager Adam Reid said: ‘We battered them second half but their goalkeeper made some excellent saves to keep them ahead.
‘Tower gave us problems at the back in the first half but saying that we played pretty poorly.
The players had a roasting at half time and they responded well but we couldn’t beat their ‘keeper in the end.
‘We’re not happy with the draw, it’s two points lost rather than one gained.’ Rozel Rovers collected their first victory of the season, 3-1 at Le Couvent against Jersey Wanderers to leave Wanderers pointless from three games.
Former under-21 Muratti captain Chris Corfield fired Wanderers ahead only for Rozel to hit back through Jerry O’Shea and twice in the closing ten minutes through Stuart Truscott and Paul Lennon.
