Herbert helps England end on a high
Monday 26th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY’S Beckie Herbert played a prominent role as England won their last two games in the ladies U21 Hockey World Cup to finish ninth overall.
Playing for places nine to 12, England first beat Scotland 3-2, then hosts Chile 4-1 with their best showing of the tournament.
Herbert (19) again played well against tournament hosts Chile, in front of a huge crowd in Santiago, having scored the winner in a previous group match encounter.
The Leicester Fyffes’ midfielder didn’t get on the scoresheet this time, but controlled play and gave great support to her attack and defence.
Alex Danson scored twice, with Charlotte Hartley and Crista Cullen getting England’s others.
So it was a good ending to a rather disappointing tournment campaign, which got off to such a disastrous start with a 4-2 defeat against the USA, although the Americans did go on to surprise several other established hockey nations.
Such was the format of the competition, with results against fellow qualifiers going forward to the next stage, that England struggled to get over that opening shock.
Korea retained their world title with a 1-0 victory over Germany in the final.
