Phelan hat-trick earns St Paul’s last-gasp victory over St Brelade

STRIKER Stephen Phelan hit a last-gasp goal to complete a hat-trick and 3-2 victory for St Paul’s under-16s on Sunday morning.

Having given hosts St Paul’s the lead, at the third attempt after his first two shots were blocked, Phelan notched twice more in the final eight minutes to leave St Brelade distraught after they had fought back to lead 2-1 just after the hour.

It was a cruel blow for the parish side, who netted through Charlie Johnson and Aaron Quaeck, as they were heading for a deserved point.

St Paul’s victory keeps them two points ahead of Jersey Scottish, 3-1 victors at the Hockey Club against champions Jersey Wanderers.

Chris Mourant stabbed Wanderers ahead after Keiran Cooper’s shot was blocked by the goalkeeper only for Scottish to bounce back and win with goals from Arthur Illingworth, Calum Brennan’s well-directed header and a 25-yard shot from Glasgow Celtic triallist Jack Boyle.

‘It was a great game and a hard-fought victory,’ said Scottish manager Pat Brennan.

‘It was fairly tight throughout and looking at the results so far it appears it is going to be a close division and that can only be good for the clubs and the players.

‘Wanderers’ Dane Sutton hit the crossbar with a volley from the half-way line, it was a brilliant effort and if it had gone in I would be telling you it was the best ‘goal’ I’d ever seen.

‘He showed fantastic technique, I don’t know how he did but he was up in the air when he shaped himself excellently to strike the ball goalwards – and he knew what he was doing.

‘Danny Ratcliffe made so many good saves to keep us in the game while Jack Boyle was instrumental in midfield and I’m sure playing a bit of senior football at first-team and reserve level is bringing him along nicely.’ Wanderers manager John Hanna said: ‘It was a great game and Scottish were stronger than us at the finish and that’s down to us having a lot of first-year lads in the age group.

‘We matched them well apart from the final 15 minutes and full credit to both teams is was a very good game.

‘Dane was denied what would have been a tremendous goal; he also featured well with some excellent passing as a result of the good vision he has.’ St Ouen lead Division II on goal-difference from Sporting Academics after both clubs won 4-1.

Matthew Belsey struck twice and John Borg and Ben Green once each for the Accies with Jordan White replying.

Anthony Fitzmaurice hit Rozel Rovers’ consolation in their defeat by the home team at St Ouen, the Saints on target through Calum Dixon (two), Matthew Sutherland and Joseph Bough.

Trinity scored 13 times without reply away to Grouville in the U14 division.

Reuben Pestana (five), Sam Dutson (three), Harry Watkins (two), Scott Finnigan, Will Poole and Logan McGee on target.

Curtis Guthrie scored four times in First Tower’s 9-0 home success against St Ouen.

Andrew Rabet (two), Alex Carpenter (two) and Daniel Roberts completed the rout at La Hague Manor.

Matthew Ahier hit a hat-trick and Karl Hinds and Jason Miller singles in St Brelade’s 5-2 home win against St Peter, Josh Coudrais and Scott Welsh replying.

Doubles from Jake Hudson and Grant Johnson and a single by Damian Brée earned St Clement a 5-1 home success against Rozel Rovers.

Arron Young replied.

St Paul’s B defeated Jersey Wanderers B following two goals by Jack Hinton and one apiece from Danny Caldwell and James Goddard in the U12 White Group.

St Ouen scored two own goals in their 7-0 Blue group defeat by St John.

Hugh Howell scored three for St John and Matthew Nerac and Zak Pygott one each.

Jack Dunford (two), Louis Hervé, Bruno da Silva, Scott Keane and Thomas Le Moignan netted Grouville’s goals in a 6-1 win against Rozel Rovers.
