Police want speed cameras

Tuesday 27th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

THE police are calling for the introduction of speed cameras and penalty points.

They have told the Home Affairs Committee that cameras would be an effective deterrent, save money and free officers to fight crime elsewhere.

Police chief Graham Power said that the days of officers standing by the road operating speed guns are numbered.

He said that a rethink was needed to take the fight against speeders forward and to address what is consistently highlighted as a top priority for Islanders in police surveys.

However, the idea of speed cameras being introduced will horrify some motorists who subscribe to the campaign championed by motoring enthusiasts, such as TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, to have them banned.

In the UK and elsewhere, speed cameras have enraged people so much that they have been vandalised and even blown up in protest.
