Wanderers to Madeira

Tuesday 27th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY Wanderers Football Club’s junior section are to play a second match against Madeiran professionals Clube Deportivo Nacional

Wanderers defeated Nacional 2-1 at Springfield last February, before a crowd approaching 700, in a prestigious match arranged to help forge closer links between the two island communities.

Now a second game has been arranged with Wanderers FC travelling to Madeira for four days early in November.

Wanderers junior secretary and assistant under-18 manager Bob Lawrence said: ‘It was a fantastic occasion back in February and now it’s our turn to visit Madeira.

‘We will field a team of players mainly under the age of 17 along with a few of our present under-16s.

National will play their U16s and if the weather is good the game will be played immediately after a first-team game, so, hopefully, there will be a big crowd for our lads to play in front of.’ Club president Gary Dauvin will lead the Wanderers party of around 35.

It will include several Wanderers committee members together with a few parents.

Lawrence, who is unable to go on the trip, added: ‘Everyone is looking forward to the trip.

We are continuing to forge links with Madeira for our club and while there we have a full itinerary with a couple of island tours included too.

‘Several formal functions have been arranged for us while our players will have three days of coaching with National’s professional coaches.

‘We are extremely grateful to Luis Vieira of Estrela Travel, Luis has made all the arrangements and without him and his contacts this trip would not be going ahead.’ Wanderers travel to Madeira on 5 November returning on 8 November.
