The ‘questioner in chief’ steps down as Deputy
Friday 30th September 2005, 12:00AM BST.
DEPUTY Phil Rondel will not be seeking re-election for his St John seat in November.
The arch-questioner is stepping down for ‘personal and family reasons’ after 11 years as a Member of the States.
But he has not ruled out a return at some future point.
‘My family come first, and it is with regret that I shall be leaving the political arena when my term expires,’ he said.
He will be 60 at his next birthday but is still full of energy.
The Deputy was first elected in 1994 in a by-election in St John when he stood against former Constable John Le Sueur.
In his time in the States Deputy Rondel has asked more questions of committee presidents than all the other 52 politicians put together.
‘We have different strengths, and with a background as an honorary police officer, I found that I was able to use those investigatory skills to compile questions that needed answering on behalf of the public,’ he said.
