Convent on top form
Friday 7th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
DEUTSCHE Bank Winter Netball League champions Convent A were in top form on Monday, gaining a handsome victory over close rivals St Clement A at the FB Fields.
Convent A 49, St Clement A 30: The tall athletic Convent side, stunning in their new kit, won all four quarters of a highly-charged, high-tempo game.
Captain Laura Beeston led from the top, not missing a shot in the first quarter which ended with the champions 15-8 up.
Lauren Devine denied Saints’ experienced Zoe Hotton shooting opportunities as part of a tactical battle in the circle which had Convent mixing up their defensive play.
St Clement’s player of the match, Jenna Meredith, used her experience to outwit the young defending partnership but young England star Serena Guthrie drew on her technical knowledge and regularly turned over the ball in Convent’s favour.
Georgia Hickey once again impressed, helping Convent’s defensive trio turn over no less than 40 balls.
Saints goalkeeper Sharon West enjoyed some spectacular interceptions but the young Convent soon adjusted and by half time they led 25-14.
St Clement changed Hayley Miller from WA to WD taking off Cally Meredith and replacing her with youngster Zoe Hewlett.
Abbie Hazley and Carol McKeon were evenly matched at centre, Hazley using her height well around the circle and McKeon using her experience to link well for the Saints.
Sophie Holmes, Convent’s player of the match, was on fire.
In addition to a prodigious work rate, she lit up the court with grace and composure to convert some stunning goals.
Lynsey Pitman fitted in well at wing attack and her vision was exceptional for a 15-year-old.
Convent again increased their lead, entering the final quarter at 38-22.
Saints came out fighting and closed the gap to 12 goals before Convent began to turn the screw, finishing with a flurry of goals.
St Peter 43, Convent C 50: Convent started with shooters Jennie Harrop and Skye Olive in superb form.
They maintained their lead in the second quarter, although St Peter started to settle with Mary Le Hegerat working hard in centre court to support her new team members.
Convent’s lead was increased in the third quarter, but when St Peter shooters Anne Van Der Vliet and Anita Taylor-Fitch switched positions good interceptions in Convent’s circle from Jackie Pannenbourg and Kaye Warren, brought the Saints to within seven goals.
Players of the match: Convent – Lara Crenan; St Peter – Anita Taylor-Fitch.
