Former England star to make Jersey debut in RSL Shield
Friday 7th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
ENGLAND men’s singles badminton champion Mark Constable will be at the New Gilson Hall tomorrow – playing for Jersey’s second team!
Constable (29), who is also a Commonwealth Games team gold medalist, has come to live in the Island and will turn out for his adopted home in the first of this season’s three senior inter-insular badminton clashes as Jersey’s second string take on their counterparts from Guernsey for the RSL Shield.
Last season was a memorable for Jersey.
They won the Gilson Cup for the first time in 27 years with a crushing 28-2 victory, won their National League and were unbeaten all season.
They also won team gold at the Shetland Island Games and claimed four out of the five individual gold medals.
In addition they also won the veterans inter-insular for the first time in seven years and the Under 15s and drew the RSL.
To top everything Elizabeth Cann won the English ladies singles title.
But Guernsey will also field a strong team tomorrow – they can include the vastly experienced Darren Le Tissier, Glen Macfarlane and Sarah Garbutt in their line-up.
And both sides have several players who are sure to feature in the Gilson in April.
The match starts at 10 am.
Jersey: Mark Constable, Gavin Carter, Chris Guillochon, John Wood, Nick Thorne, Jamie Smith, Natalie White, Tracey Hudson, Annabelle Lea, Dimple Mukhi, Jean Cross, Gill Luce.
