Gamble pays off for Jersey Clipper

Friday 7th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.

A TACTICAL gamble by skipper Mark Taylor has paid off to catapult the Jersey Clipper into third place in the round-the-world race.

Two days ago the team had to make the tough decision whether to steer through, or sail to the west of, the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa.

After much deliberation the skipper went with his gut instinct and took the route around the islands.

He said: ‘Please have faith with us over the next 48 hours, as I expect we shall fall back two places in the next 24 hours before we see the benefits south and west of Cape Verde.

Time will tell.’
