Great Spartan double for Spartan ladies
Monday 10th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY SPARTAN AC enjoyed a superb double victory in an international event in Rennes, France over the weekend.
Not only did Jo McGarry win the ladies’ 10 km road race event in the city’s festival of running, Sarah Bruce also triumphed in the half marathon.
With both races attracting around 2,700 entries, many of them top class runners like Fabien Joseph, the world half-marathon champion, these were superb results.
McGarry, who missed out on a Commonwealth Games 5,000m time on the track this season, clocked 35 min 37 second to finish 44th overall, with clubmate Ken White the only male Spartan ahead of her in 41st spot.
White finished in 35.20 and was the second Over-50 male.
Bruce won the ladies’ half marathon section in 1 hr 29 min, having run the 13.1-mile distance alongside fellow Spartan Glenn Robinson.
Jerry Keen was, however, the first Spartan to finish, in 1.25.
Other Spartan times and places were: 10 km – 55, Jon Coote (35.58); Mark Allen 36.20; 95, Peter Le Couilliard 37.20; 137, Dave Hallden 38.18; Gary Broster 39.18; Jamie Bara 40.09, Nick Gorrod 41.02 and Jane Wilson 51.00.
