Luck returns for Academics as they play nap hand at the finish
Monday 10th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
FUNNY game football – how many times have we heard that?
Just over a week ago Beeches Old Boys were proudly sitting top of Division II while Sporting Academics had their heads bowed following a 14-0 Le Riches Cup humiliation by Channel Islands champions Jersey Scottish.
The tables were turned completely on Saturday with the Accies scoring five times in the final 16 minutes to beat the Old Boys 8-3 in a Division II game at the FB Fields.
Accies manager Tommy Kyle said: ‘Yes it’s been a strange week.
Sometimes you have no luck and that’s what happened against Scottish.
On Saturday we played to our potential and after a tight game for 75 minutes we ran away with it in the end.
‘Beeches beat us 7-4 recently in the Willis Cup and we felt there was no way they deserved to win by that margin that night.
‘We performed well on Saturday, junior Sean Doran had his best game of the season scoring a hat-trick while Phil Helleur’s hat-trick was outstanding – two lobbed efforts and a 25-yard finish after running from the half-way line!’ Jamie Savory, one of five juniors who started, and Michael Perreira also netted for the Accies.
Hamlyn Moon hit a double and Bob Bonney a single for the Old Boys.
Jersey Nomads, who have a game in hand on leaders St Ouen, maintained their 100 per cent record following a 4-3 success at St Clement.
Ben Doherty hit a hat-trick for Nomads, one was a penalty kick with Paul Starkey getting the other.
Adrian Carr scored St Clement’s three goals.
Magpies and Portuguese shared four goals at the Airport.
Luke Heynes and Mark Le Marinel notched for the Magpies and Carlos Ferreira and Paul Gouveia for Portuguese.
St Lawrence and St John also took a point apiece following a three-all draw at St Lawrence.
Tom Gibb (two penalties) and Chris Swanton registered for the hosts and Mark Roche, Jason Reynolds and Steve Brady for the visitors.
St Peter ended Grouville’s unbeaten Division I Reserves run after scoring three times without reply at home, twice through junior Ryan Le Cornu and once by Mark Nicol.
Junior Scott Slicer notched a brace and Stuart Brown and Tom Carolan singles as Jersey Wanderers won 4-0 at Le Couvent against Rozel Rovers.
Justin Lumsden and Brian Sand were on the mark in Jersey Scottish’s 2-1 win against St Ouen at Les Quennevais.
Rob Sanford replied from the penalty spot.
St Paul’s scratched mid-morning as they only had six players available to play against Trinity at St Saviour.
St Ouen, from a game played more, moved three points clear at the top of Division C after goals from Dave Wright (two), Craig Beeley, Phil Faulkner and Charlie du Feu took them to a 5-0 success against hosts St Brelade.
Despite having Alex Reid sent off, St Clement drew 4-4 at home to Rozel Rovers.
Justin Merrick (two), Paul Tumelty and Michael Nicholson scored for the Saints with Rozel’s Sean Anderton hitting a hat-trick and Tony Amorin a single.
Jon Rabey, Steve Dewhurst, Simon Davies and Rab Campbell scored St Peter’s goals in a 4-2 win at Les Quennevais against Sporting Academics.
Justin Spencer-Burrows and Eddie Cookson replied.
