Bermuda bid for Island Games 2011

ANOTHER exciting venue is on the cards for the NatWest Island Games.

Following on from Rhodes in 2007 and Aland in 2009 the Caribbean island of Bermuda have now put themselves forward for 2011.

Competing against them will be the Isle of Wight, hosts in 1993.

The Caymans had also intended to bid for rights to host the 24-strong family of islands in six years time, but the damage wrought by Hurricane Ivan last year has forced them to shelve their plans.

Said Jon Beard, chairman of Bermuda IGA: ‘At present we are meeting with our Government’s Ministry of Youth and Sport, as well as Ministry of Tourism in preparation of a strong bid.’ Although the Isle of White was the first Games in which Jersey topped the medals table there was a rather heated wrangle over accommodation which resulted in the Jersey team going it alone and staying in a hotel.

By 2011 it will have been six years since a British island hosted the Games, but lure of the Carribbean, yet to host a Games, will probably make Bermuda favourites, should they come up with a financial package on flights and accommodation to match the Isle of Wight.

The IoW was defeated by Rhodes in their attempt to organise the 2007 Games.
