Jersey 2nds’ strength in depth sinks Guernsey by 60 points

CAN anyone catch Jersey 2nds in the JRA league following a 70-10 rout of Guernsey RFC 2nds at St Peter on Sunday?

Despite having played only two games this season, they have already beaten both Guernsey teams in the league and have a points total of for: 101, against 10.

And, as coach Dai Burton explained after seeing his side all but crush the opposition: ‘We were dominant in every part of the field, even though, to their credit, Guernsey never gave up and scored two tries of their own; one in each half.

‘But there’s a fair bit of talent in the club (Jersey), so my problem is a difficult one – guaranteeing all of our players regular games.’ He pinpointed two tries as the best he’d seen, both for their simplicity.

‘After seven or eight minutes we passed the ball across the threes, finally to Mark Le Mottée at fullback, who had a simple run around their full-back to score.

A simple, text book threequarter try.

‘The second came about 30 minutes into the match.

Good interplay passing saw Anthony Hurford and Jim Milner enjoy a two to one chance against their full-back; Hurford drew his man and put Milner in for the cleanest of scores.’ Such was Jersey’s domination that he couldn’t remember all of the scorers, but believes Le Mottée scored 3; Jim Milner 2, Sean O’Brien 2, Harry Bonn 2, with solos for Michael Soley and Danny McAllister – ‘plus one or two catch and drives or push-over tries from the scrum.

Twelve in all,’ he said, with a hint of satisfaction, ‘although Jon Swift only converted five of them’.

Meanwhile, at the KG5 pitch in Guernsey, St Jacques, who two weeks before had lost to Jersey 2nds 31-0, this time lost to visitors Les Quennevais RFC 14-39.

Despite not scoring a try of his own, the Jersey side’s man of the match, Matt Gilley, made more than one try by constantly hounding the St Jacques’ stand-off, twice charging down hastily taken kicks which led to more pressure and, ultimately, tries.

In the forwards Les Quennevais were pleased to see Richard Vetier stamp his authority on the game, as he led by example and, in turn, scored twice.

For St Jacques, who tried to play an eight-man game, their most opportunist score was when Angus Murphy intercepted a loose pass and ran through, unopposed, to score.

However, it was too little too late and, as visiting captain Darren O’Brien said afterwards: ‘Thanks to our sponsors we could afford to bring our best side to Guernsey, and they showed their motivation after only five minutes with a great forward try.

After that, we kept up the tempo for the rest of the game.’ Try scorers: Les Quennevais: Richard Briffa, Leon Gocoul, Richard Vetier (2), Marc Harris, Gary Rousseau.

Conversions: Rousseau (3).

Penalty: Rousseau.

St Jacques (tries): Angus Murphy, Mark Griffiths.

Conversions: Chris Griffiths.
