Midfield mastery the key for JHC Veterans
Wednesday 12th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
Jersey Hockey Club Veterans, who were forced to play their home tie away, in Oxted in Surrey, enjoyed a comfortable 5-2 victory over Hereford HC.
Jersey were forced into some last-minute changes, the main one forced by Paul Duckworth’s illness, with super vet Tim Pollard filling in as goalkeeper.
Although a number of the team were carrying injuries Jersey started well and soon started to dominate the midfield through Paul Masterton, Rob Hurry and Conrad Evans.
Jersey took the lead after Jerry Bolton, receiving from Julian Gale, went round the back of the defence on the right and shot from an acute angle.
The shot was blocked, but Chris Rebindaine, playing his first game for a few years, tucked away the rebound.
Peter Taylor was causing the Hereford defence difficulties on the left, winning a number of penalty corners.
Masterton increased the lead with a shot to the ‘keeper’s right, and Rebindaine scored the third, again following up a rebound, with a neat reverse flick.
Jersey went 4-0 up after a fine individual run from Hurry.
Starting in his own half, he took the ball into the D and after his first shot was saved, slammed the rebound into the top right-hand corner.
Hereford pulled one back before half time, when John Lackum scored from a penalty corner.
In the second half, Hereford went on the defensive and seemed happy to give away penalties.
Unfortunately, Jersey did not take full advantage.
Jersey scored their fifth, again following a penalty corner, when Evans pounced on a loose ball to sweep the ball into the net.
The Jersey defence had little to do although Hereford pulled one back through Marcus Constante in the closing minutes from a penalty corner.
