Old Victorians hit the goal trail in Div I
Thursday 13th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
BOTH Old Victorians teams in Division I, Victims and Convicts, enjoyed big victories last Saturday.
In another Division I fixture Victoria College 1sts lost 8-1 against Jersey HC Thornbacks, with Adrian Heelis and Richard Determyer claiming hat-tricks and Ali Hall two for the victors.
Daniel Lundy scored for College.
Investec Men’s Division I, Jersey HC A 1, OV Victims 6: A hat-trick from John Cartmell helped propel Victims to a handsome victory over a Jersey side that had taken the lead.
Cartmell equalised following a penalty corner, then pushed Victims ahead with a field goal.
Matt Wilson, Robin Le Quesne and Sean O’Flaherty added field goals before Cartmell ended the scoring with his third.
In another Division I match OV Convicts beat Hautlieu 5-1, Hautlieu’s goal coming from James Foley.
Investec Men’s Division II: JHC Tigers 4, Hunters 1: Experience won the day in this the first meeting between the teams.
The old heads in the Tigers team soon asserted themselves and their first goal, a glorious solo effort by Mark Bailey, came after 15 minutes.
Hunters were kept on the back foot and Tigers doubled their lead seven minutes later through Stuart Gower who displayed good close control.
Minutes later only quick refelexes from ‘keeper Nathan Maguire, normally a striker for Hautlieu, prevented Glynn Curtis from further extending Tigers’ lead.
Tigers strengthened their grip on the game with a Bailey penalty flick after a loose tackle on Gower in the D.
Two minutes into the second half Jim Coutanche steered in Tigers’ fourth, with Maguire, unfortunately, having been given a call that the deflection was from outside the D.
Hunters never let their heads go down and fought all the way and managed a consolation goal with ten minutes remaining.
Another break out by Ed Anketell-Costa down the wing was followed by a square pass to Roberts, in the centre of the D, and he easily converted.
Crusaders 4, Jersey HC C 0: Crusaders clocked up another convincing victory, scorcing twice in each half.
Simon Garton opened the scoring on five minutes when he rounded off a neat bit of approach play.
Ten minutes later he scored again when he swept Mark Temple’s powerful pass into the net from close range.
The game flowed up and down the pitch, but Jersey’s forwards found Matt Burrow and John Carnegie resolute in defence.
Young Morton Stanton was having rather a dull game in the Crusaders goal, but opposite number Tim Pollard must have felt like a fairground target as a good number of shots homed in on him.
Crusaders had the edge in play and extended their lead after the break when William Mallett latched onto a rebound off Pollard’s pads.
Mallett rounded off the scoring with another close range effort after P Le Bihan’s great run down the left wing.
Stalwart Nigel Poole made a welcome return for Jersey at right back, while youngster Rufus Scholefield put on a confident display.
