Three Brits in men’s semi-finals

Friday 14th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.

CROWDS continue to flock to the Les Ormes Indoor Tennis Centre as the Caversham International Tennis Tournament moves towards its conclusion this weekend.

And the play yesterday was again of the highest quality as the field contested the $10,000 men’s futures and $25,000 women’s international honours.

In the ladies’ doubles, Jersey’s Rebecca Edwards and Francesca Dubras defeated fellow Islanders Laura Cudden-Large and Sarah Jones 6-2, 6-2, to set up a quarter-final today against fourth seeds Veronika Chvojkova (Czechoslovakia) and Stanislava Hrozenska (SVK).

All four doubles seeds progressed to the last eight stage yesterday while three Briton’s are playing in the men’s singles semi-finals today.

Mark Harston won 7-6, 6-4 against fellow Brit Alexander Slabinsky, the latter who defeated top seed Mark Hilton earlier in the week.

Harston meets GB’s Jamie Baker today.

Baker yesterday overcame France’s Ludwin Pellerin 6-1 in the deciding third set after Pellerin drew level after taking the second set on a tie-break.

The longest singles match yesterday involved GB’s Matthew Smith and Czechoslovakian Ladislav Chramosta.

Smith, who criticised himself each time he made an error, emerged 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victor after some excellent rallies coupled with some deft touches by both players.

British hopes of a fourth semi-finalist ended when No 2 seed Nicolas Tourte, of France, defeated Colin Fleming 7-6, 6-2.

The first and second seeds in the women’s singles have reached the quarter-final stage.

Top seed Elana Baltacha (GB) beat Stanislava Hrozenska (Slovakia) 7-5, 6-4 while second seed Margit Ruutel (Estonia) came through 6-4, 7-6 against Ireland’s Kelly Liggan.

The two fancied outsiders, Kirsten Flipkens and Russian qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova, progressed with straight-sets victories, Shvedova ousting sixth seed Karolina Kosinska 7-6, 7-5 in another breath-taking match.

The only seed to fall in the men’s doubles was the French pairing of Jean-Baptiste Dupuy and Nicolas Torte who fell to Tom Rushby (GBR) and Benedikt Stronk (GER) 6-2, 6-2.

Admission is free and spectators are welcome to attend.
