London Nigerians end Jersey Cup adventure
Monday 17th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY RFC’s adventure in the Powergen Intermediate Cup is over after a nailbiting 26-24 defeat away from home against London North Division II side London Nigerian on Saturday.
Indeed, so close was the game before the referee blew after 80 minutes that the Nigerians’ coach thought that Jersey had won; not surprisingly he was doubly delighted when Jersey’s coach Dai Burton told him the final score.
‘It was a good game,’ said Burton.
‘We played at the Linford Christie Stadium, a delightful pitch, even if it was immediately behind Wormwood Scrubs.
‘We aimed to play a kicking game, with the wind in the first half, which we did with 50 per cent success.
If our kicks were poor, however, they ran back at us at every opportunity.’ Full report in today’s JEP.
