High-rise back in the frame

PLANNING’S UK advisers are suggesting that there is a case to be made for tall buildings on the waterfront and in town.

However, the British government-funded Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment say that much depends on the design quality and how tall buildings fit in with the townscape and harbour.

In a report released today, authors Ben van Bruggen and Paul Sanderson are critical of the lack of an overall three-dimensional master plan before Dandara and travel entrepreneur David Crossland unveiled their high-rise plans.

They said: ‘Tall buildings must be properly planned as part of a place-making process informed by a long-term comprehensive vision, rather than an ad hoc reactive and piecemeal manner.’
