Tax man warns: ‘Don’t be stupid’
Tuesday 18th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
THOSE people intending not to hand in their effective rate notice and settle for the default rate of 15 per cent are being warned not to be ‘so stupid’.
The Income Tax Department has warned people not to try to deliberately avoid paying a high rate otherwise they could face an investigation by tax officers.
This month around 45,000 people have received their effective rate notices, which explains what amount of tax will be deducted each month by their employers.
However, those that do not submit their effective rate notices to their employers will be automatically charged a default rate of 15 per cent.
There are suggestions that some people with a rate higher than 15 per cent do not intend submitting their rates so that they will only be charged the default of 15 per cent.
