Poll triumph for Senator Syvret and independent newcomers
Thursday 20th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
SENATOR Stuart Syvret topped the poll in yesterday’s Senatorial election on a night that proved to be disastrous for Jersey’s two fledgling political parties.
Both the Jersey Democratic Alliance and the Centre Party which broke away from it were shunned by an Islandwide electorate which went for an intriguing balance of old and new faces.
It was also a night that proved it will take more than a States PR campaign to shake Jersey out of its apathy, with only four in ten voters bothering to exercise their democratic right in an election billed as one the most important ever.
An extra 8,000 voters may have registered to vote, but in the end only 2,000 more turned out this year than three years ago.
